John Tukakira

Master’s Student Teams up with Faculty Member to Address Sickle Cell Disease

More than 7,000 miles from Pittsburgh, John Tukakira’s first encounter with Pitt Public Health sparked a partnership that would later inspire his academic journey.

“I was in Uganda working on a clinical trial and the University of Pittsburgh was a partner institution, which is how I got to know the School of Public Health,” said Tukakira, a second-year MPH student in the school’s Department of Epidemiology.

Chasing a rare disease

When Anthony Anzell, PhD, was a sophomore in high school, a terrible migraine came out of nowhere and lasted for several weeks. His only relief came from sleeping, which he was doing about 21 hours a day. “I wasn’t eating anything,” Anzell, now a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Human Genetics, recalls of those days in 2007. “I lost somewhere around 40 pounds. Since I didn’t have much weight to lose, my parents were very, very concerned.” Despite being told to “wait it out” by his doctors, Anzell’s strong-willed mother pushed for a diagnosis. When it came, they were astounded.

Pitt Researcher Combines Sustainability Efforts, Education and Research in Trip to Bolivia

The amount of waste from expired and unused lab supplies always bothered Pitt researcher Danielle Tufts. But after reading about a sanctuary that rescues animals from abuse, illegal pet trade and wildlife trafficking in Bolivia, she saw an opportunity. Comunidad Inti Wara Yassi (CIWY) provides veterinary care and rehabilitation for rescued animals, and Tufts, assistant professor of infectious diseases and microbiology at the Pitt’s School of Public Health, has access to veterinary supplies the organization could use to help provide that care.
